The Republican Mask is Off?

You know, it is getting almost too amusing to watch the modern Republicans and conservatives who are running for office.  This is so ridiculous, yet at the same time, so horrible, that one must actually pause and legitimately think about what it all means for the future of this country, and that causes worry.

Take Frank Szabo, for instance.  He is a New Hampshire candidate running for sheriff.  When asked what his opinion was about abortion, he replied that he would go so far as to use deadly force to stop the abortion from happening.  Let me say that again, because it bears repeating – if he sees a doctor performing a procedure that is completely legal in this country, he would used deadly force against this person.  He would kill them.  A sheriff candidate of New Hampshire wants to murder doctors.  Straight-up, no BS, murder.  In other words, he wants to take what is legal, and make it illegal, at the threat of violence.  He is a protector of the law who wants to make the law.  Think about that for a few.

Next up, we’ve got Tennessee senator, Stacey Campfield.  This guy had some rather interesting thoughts on AIDS, and how it is spread –

Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community. It was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men.  It was an airline pilot, if I recall.  My understanding is that it is virtually – not completely, but virtually – impossible to contract AIDS from heterosexual sex.

Yeah, that’s why there are massive amounts of cases of it in Africa, right?  Take another moment, and take this in.  This is a United States senator, saying something so stupid, and even admitting that they don’t know any better, and saying this on the record.  How stupid can you possibly get?

I mean, for one thing, it is incredibly unlikely that AIDS made the jump from chimps to humans.  That story has been debunked over and over again.  And the fact that this disease is a global pandemic, which has been helped along in Africa thanks to the zealotry of Catholics who refuse to supply condoms to villages where this disease is so bad that 1 in 4 people have it, obviously means nothing to you.

Next up, there is Rep. Steve King.  He has decided to add another point to the laundry-list of stupidity that has come from his mouth.  In a recent interview, he said that he hasn’t heard of a case where a girl got pregnant from statutory rape or incest.  This was in solidarity with the completely idiotic nonsense coming from Todd Akin, and his belief that if a woman gets raped, her body will be able to shut it down.  A statement that he has apologized for, yet hasn’t said is wrong.  Remember that.

This is the same guy who has said in the past that gays should just stay in the closet if they want their jobs, and not be open at all.  Basically saying that all the hate and bigotry of society shouldn’t be something that they get protection from.  They should just hide, and not be honest about who they are.

What interests me about all of these people is this – why are they being so openly evil?  I mean, we all knew that the Republicans were bought and paid for by the banks and Wall Street.  The Democrats are no better in that regard.  But the Democrats are still able to actually convince people that they are the good guys!  That they are on your side.  Heck, they have a huge cabal of liberals who are cheering for Health Care Reform, which, without a public option, is a huge birthday present to the private insurance companies.

I mean, look at Obama.  He has lied, time and time again, and he has massive support all over this country.  He has continued, and even grown the Bush doctrine, both foreign and domestic.  He promised that we wouldn’t be doing the same things with Wall Street and the financial institutions, yet he is taking his cues from the same people who destroyed our economy.  He said that he would go easy on people growing their own pot, yet he has expanded the drug war.  He promised tough reforms on Wall Street, yet he has given us beyond toothless garbage.  He said that he would push for tough health care reform, yet he dropped single-payer and the public option almost in the first day.  He has continued, and even grown ALL of the Bush Tax Cuts.  He swore that he wouldn’t give in to Republican demands on the debt ceiling, yet in the end, he gives them everything they want, and then some.

But all over this country, he has liberals coming out and chanting for him.  For some, it is the reasoning that Mitt Romney would be worse.  The evil they know over the evil they don’t.  For others, they actually seem to think that he is going to come back in the second term and really play hardball (cough*bullshit*cough).  And there are some who think that he has actually done some really good stuff, even though the evidence is massively stacked against him, and Mitt Romney, if he was actually a smart politician, could be beating the stuffing out of him right now with his own policies.  That is grade-A manipulation and lying.

Yet these Republicans are so evil, and wear it so much on their sleeves that I almost expect to see them do the pose that Dr. Evil did in Austin Powers.  I mean, they aren’t even hiding it!

So I guess the question is – how do we satire this?  For real, I am almost feeling bad for the people who write for The Onion.  Their job must be getting so difficult.  This nation and it’s electoral politics is becoming such an entertainment experience that part of me wonders if there are actual issues being talked about anymore.

So, is the Republican mask off?  Hey, when you’ve got Ann Coulter, a prostitute for the conservative line, saying that Todd Akin has crossed the line, part of me has to think that, yeah, they have.

Legitimate Rape? Oh damn…

You know, every time I see something floating around the internet, I think to myself – this has to be the stupidest thing ever.  It just doesn’t get any stupider.  But bless America’s beyond-stupid heart, because every time one thinks this, I am proven dead wrong.  There is a quote that is from an actual congressman serving in the House of Representatives.  This man has said something that, I have to believe, can’t be topped.  This is the stupidest thing said in the history of humanity.  If it gets any dumber than this, I give up.

Here is the quote –

From what I understand from doctors, pregnancy from rape is really rare.  If it’s a legitimate rape (pay attention to this), the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.  -Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO)

Just take a moment.  Take a moment of the stupidity of that quote to sink in to your subconscious.  Take a moment to really try and understand how incredibly stupid this actually is.  And this came from a person who is a member of Congress.  Think about all the education opportunities that this person should have had.  Think about all the chances that this person had to be a little, ever so slightly, bit smarter, and then he says something this stupid.

Got all that?  Now, let’s look between the lines at what has actually been said here.  First, this person either has no understanding of female anatomy, crime, and what things are, or he is straight-up evil.  For one thing, there are countless number of rapes all over the world, not just in America, that end up in the woman getting pregnant.  The female reproductive system doesn’t discriminate based on how the sperm got in there.  It functions all the same.  Whoever these “doctors” are who told this man these facts, they obviously got their education from their parents who probably speak southern-English.

A part of me has to believe that this person is just stupid.  So stupid that they can’t possibly understand how dumb what they said actually is.  Otherwise, what is being said here is evil.  Think about it – is Akin arguing that if the body doesn’t destroy the fetus, it wasn’t legitimate rape?

Is the argument really that the thousands of women in this country who get raped every year and get pregnant from that rape not legitimately raped?  Wow, this person is one of the worst people on Earth!  For real, that’s like saying that when a kid’s puppy died, it’s the kid’s fault because he didn’t love the puppy enough.  That’s how evil this is.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Republican Party stands for nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  I mean, you have politicians who are making arguments like this, obviously trying to make this an argument for getting rid of abortion in the case of rape.  This person actually arguing that a woman who gets pregnant wasn’t “legitimately” raped.  In theory.  The other option is that this person is too stupid for words.

Yet there is a massive, massive part of this country who follows these morons.  They actually think that what these idiots have to say is worth their time.  They actually think that these people are the kind of people we need in public office.

If anyone asks why I am ashamed, humiliated, and disgusted with my own country, I show them stuff like this.  Seriously, The Onion made a story in response to this, and it was that a woman who was so relieved that her rape wasn’t legitimate.  That’s what it has come to in America.

But you wanna know the truly scary part?  Todd Akin has said that his opinion is wrong, but hasn’t backed down from it.  He has been refuted, time and time again, yet he doesn’t say that he’s wrong.  And half of this country wants that.  Half of this country (or not, depending on who you talk to), wants to hear that this is true.

And if we allow that.  If we let people like this have that opinion, then here is the worst price of all – that the truth is whatever this country wants it to be.  And that should terrify you, America.

It does me.

Paul Ryan: What Needs to be Said?

Well, Mitt Romney has come out with his pick for Vice President.  This pick has turned more than a couple of heads.  Many are confused, some are amused, others actually wonder what this will mean for Mitt Romney.  I am one of the second and third category.  Actually, wait, just second.  I already know what it will do for Mitt Romney’s campaign.

For those who don’t know, Paul Ryan is a Representative with a lot of REALLY stupid ideas.  The first is that the poor need to pay more taxes than the rich.  For real, he has tried to argue that position to his own constituents.  Of course, since people in this country are that stupid, they booed him off like the idiot that he is.

He also believes that Medicare should be completely sacked, replaced instead with a vouchers system.  Man, what kind of idiot is Mitt Romney?  The only, and I do mean only strategy that he can have for this election is to play to the elderly vote.  You think the elderly are going to want to get rid of Medicare?

He also says that Social Security is a ponzi scheme, and he wants to get rid of it.  Again, what was Romney thinking?  The elderly people of this country, who benefit more than any other group from social security, you think that they are just going to jump on board and totally be behind getting rid of something that they benefit from and paid into?  Oh, and he says this while defending Wall Street and the TBTF banks who orchestrated actual ponzi schemes.  Gotta love the consistency there.

He also has called out the military.  When Obama proposed cutting defense spending, and several military generals came out and said that it wouldn’t harm our nation’s military at all, and we could still have a very successful military force.  Ryan said that they are liars.  In doing so, he also hinted that they are cowards.  Simply towing the White House line.  Wow, he is calling our nation’s military leaders cowards.  What conservative will get on board with that?  Well, since facts don’t seem to matter much to them, who knows.

Ryan has also voted against LGBT couples being able to adopt children in D.C.  He has basically said that it is better for a child to be a ward of the state and live in the hell that is our foster system, than it is for a child to have a loving home with loving parents.  That is evil.  That’s like strangling a puppy after killing a kitten evil.

This is the person that Mitt Romney has picked to run with him.  This socially backwards, morally bankrupt, intellectual broke character who cares only about getting his agenda for Wall Street done.  Granted, Obama isn’t much better in being a slave for Wall Street, but still, he isn’t this bad.

So, what effect will this have on Romney’s presidential bid?  Well, it is going to sink it.  More and more, it looks like Romney is deliberately trying to lose.  It’s like he knows that he has no chance, so he just wants to see how much damage he can do to the Republican image before he does.  This is just another nail in the coffin.

For real, liberals across America are going to run as fast as they can to the polls, because these two are so bat-shit crazy that the idea of having them in office is going to scare the crap out of them.  As it should.  These two are horrible people, in every sense of the word.

So, what needs to be said about Paul Ryan?  Well, he’s the gaping hole that is going to sink Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Lefty’s Outlook on the 2012 Election

Well, this post has been a long time coming.  Even given our opinion on politics at the moment, it is worth checking into where things stand right now.  This election year is an interesting one.  There are a lot of reasons why.

The first is that there are several truths that need to be analyzed when looking at the election.  The first is that the state of the American public right now is in shambles.  The middle class is rapidly disappearing, for a number of reasons.  The first is that the wages of this country have remained stagnant, while the cost of living in America has skyrocketed.  The next is that more and more students are walking away from college now with debt so high that they can’t realistically hope to get rid of it for the rest of their lives.  These debts are anchors around the people’s neck.  It is a bubble that is going to burst, because students can’t afford it, and eventually, they will just default out of these, the same way that the housing bubble burst because of default on sub-prime mortgages.

Then there is the job market.  It isn’t going anywhere.  The latest report that came out showed that the economy is going nowhere.  It is stagnated, and because the 99% of Americans are too afraid to invest and are holding tight to their money, businesses that aren’t massive corporations aren’t investing or are falling under, and the banks refuse to pay up, the government is passing legislation to cram massive amounts of money into the gaping hole that is our economy, never realizing that they are just putting off the inevitable.  And across the Atlantic, the EU is falling apart, barely being held together.  Because all the governments of the 1st world are owned by banks, the governments are being instructed to do nothing, and to not pass legislation that could get us out of the ditch.

Put simply, things are really, really bad for Americans right now.

So, with that in mind, what is the outlook for the 2012 election?  Who is going to win?  Well, to answer that, let’s look at the strategy of the presidential candidates thus far.

Mitt Romney has pretty much been doing what Republican candidates have been doing for the last 20 years.  Ever since Ronald Reagan, they are appealing to past glory.  Saying that we used to be so mighty, and we are going to be mighty again.  Basically, the argument is “Manifest Destiny.”  A cheap, overused argument that is so tired and worthless that people just don’t care about hearing it anymore.

Another problem is that Romney is basically using the same talking points as George W. Bush Jr.  And most of the American public blames the absolutely insane amounts of spending and the absolutely insane foreign policy that enabled that spending for this mess.  The economy nose-dived under Bush, and since Romney isn’t offering anything new, the people care about his message about the same.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, is doing just about the same thing, but with different language.  He has been appealing to the way things used to be, saying that with a little work, he can get things back on track for the way we were as a nation.

Here’s the problem with that strategy – people aren’t buying it.  People didn’t buy it when he said that “America is back,” and they aren’t buying that the good times are just around the corner.  There are Gallup polls showing that people think that the country is heading in the wrong direction.  The thing about it is – financially, they’re right.  He is now saying that hope and change is still the way out, but people aren’t buying that line either.

The public has lost faith.  Hopelessness and despair are setting in.  Obama blames the Republicans.  Republicans blame Obama.  The rest of us blame all of them and their pathetic adherence to Wall Street’s every whim.

As for a strategy for the election, the fact is that Obama is coasting on the weak change he’s gotten done, along with the Health Care Reform Act, one of the greatest cons in American history that the liberals are championing (read Matt Taibbi’s book, Griftopia, it is shows how obscene this new act is, along with how it is a complete sellout to the private insurance companies who have a stranglehold in medical care in this country).

Romney, in the meantime, has nothing.  He can’t run on immigration.  He can’t use Health Care Reform against Obama because he passed even more liberal (for how unbelievably conservative Obama’s Act is) legislation that actually included a public option (which is the only way this birthday present to the private insurance companies could have been worth something).  He can’t go against Obama on the economy because it will just be another back-and-forth blaming game between the two of them.

So, what will the election be about?  The same thing that all elections are about now – who America likes more.  That’s what elections are about now.  To Hell with what matters.  To Hell with political ideas.  It has simply become a popularity contest.

And that is why the American people can rest easy tonight.  Because the real truth is – it doesn’t matter.  No matter who you elect, this government will still be Wall Street’s slaves.  The military-industrial complex will still be fed with an endless supply of taxpayer dollars.  Nothing will change.  Not one damn thing.  So rest easy.  You are going to be screwed.

We all are.

Chuck Norris, Gay Rights and Conservative America

Man, where is that scene from Enter the Dragon where Bruce Lee kills Chuck Norris?  One could watch that scene a hundred times.  In any case, Chuck Norris is one of the many celebrities who feels that because they have been able to pose and act in d-list action films, and shows, they can talk about politics.  Chuck, stick to what you’re good at…never mind, you’re not good at anything.

In a recent statement, Norris has decried the recent decision by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay scouts and scout leaders.  There were all the usual talking points about the “gay agenda” (because that’s so real, right?), claiming that the BSA has a “long-standing family stance.”  Well, though I was never a Scout, I can say with pride that if the Boy Scouts are teaching kids about families, they aren’t doing their jobs well.  Last I checked, they are supposed to teach them about being a Scout, right?

But far more interesting then Norris’ statements were the comments that people made.  It never ceases to amaze how absolutely backwards and ignorant conservative America is.  There were all sorts of people who said that the only reason that gay people want to be in the Scouts is so that they can molest children.  The single oldest insult of gay men, dating back to…well, forever, is that because they are gay, they are obviously pedophiles.  The levels of ignorance coming from people who actually believe that is interesting.

It has become painfully apparent that to sell their political ideals, the Republican Party now simply runs on bigotry.  They know now who their demographic is – old and middle aged white people without a quality education.  They have lost almost all of the female vote.  They have lost almost all of the minority vote, especially with their recent actions like in Arizona.  They have lost the LGBT vote with stupid stunts like having a D-list actor trying to sound tough and informed.

The Republican Party knows that in the upcoming election, the battle lines are going to be between the elderly who are a very vocal voting block, and who are a big conservative demographic, and the young who are apathetic and don’t particularly care.  That is what American politics have become.  Not to say that there aren’t liberal elderly people.  I know a couple.  And not to say that there aren’t young people who are actively involved.  I am one such person who is.  But the majority is not, and that needs to be taken into consideration.

However, while we can all laugh at this kind of ridiculousness, and realize that Chuck Norris is a has-been action star who nobody particularly cares about anymore and who has been dropped to the point that the only people who will advertise for him now are laundry detergent companies, there is a greater truth that needs to be taken into consideration.  The war for gay rights isn’t over.  In fact, it appears that now is the time where the battle lines are the hottest.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said that in times of moral crisis, the biggest betrayal to one’s community and culture was to be silent.  That is true now more than ever.  Don’t think you can vote this problem out of office.  This has to be a changed in the level of education, and a change in cultural values.  No community would ever have gotten where it is today if the culture didn’t back it.  It doesn’t matter what politicians are in office.  The only way that change can come is when the people, as a whole, demand something better.

That’s a fact.

Liberals are Nazis! And other cheap tricks to get their base to the polls

Remember the good old days, when the increasingly irrelevant Glenn Beck was on the air and he was talking about how the liberals were going to start FEMA death camps and how the socials marxist communists were going to come for your guns and have euthanasia be required?  Well, those sorts of conversations still go on all over the country.  Fox News has been carrying the torch for the “liberals are coming for you” rhetoric.

Of course, the reason why they are using this rhetoric is simple – to get their base to the polls.  George Bush II won the 2004 elections because Karl Rove was a brilliant tactician (along with Kerry not calling Bush out, at all) who used the bigotry of these people as a weapon, by bringing up gay marriage in states that everyone knew weren’t going to pass it.  Much like Prop. 5 here in Anchorage, once you say the word “gay,” the bigots flock to make sure their bigoted opinions are known.

However, there is a problem in the Republican Party.  The base is dying.  They have alienated almost every single group.  Minorities, for the most part, left their bandwagon years ago.  The LGBT community won’t have anything to do with them.  The latest war on women has officially gotten them away from the party too.  So, if you only have middle to senior-aged white men as your base, what do you do?  The answer is easy – subvert democracy by rigging voting.

Voter suppression is nothing new in America, of course.  Back when this country was founded, only the wealthy white men got to vote.  Minorities and women were fresh out of luck there.  And there are plenty of Republicans who are trying to get back to that.  Don’t believe me?  Well, the evidence speaks for itself.

34 states have passed or are working to pass laws that make it so that voters have to show photo IDs.  15 states have passed or are working to pass laws that say you have to have your birth certificate or passport to be able to vote.  16 states have or are working to pass laws would end same-day voter registration. 9 states have passed or are working to pass laws to end early voting.  4 states are working to pass laws to get rid, outright, of absentee voting.  3 states have passed laws that restrict voter registration drives.  All of this work has been done in the last year.

The mission goal is pretty clear – stop people from getting to the polls.  Their tactics are decisive and swift.  This isn’t something that can be debated, because we are seeing it happen now.  Over 21% of Americans don’t have government-issued ID’s.  The bulk of the people who don’t are minorities, the elderly, and college students.  Care to guess where most of them vote?  They generally vote liberal.

It has even been seen on a scale that nobody pays attention to.  Here in Anchorage, Alaska, the latest municipal election was obviously a fraud.  The voting booths ran out of ballots is how it all went down.  However, in spite of this clear violation of the law, there aren’t going to be new elections, or even an outside investigation.  The Assembly simply decided to accept what has happened, and are telling everybody to basically just move on.  This is unacceptable.

However, it is efficient, and in a country where the conservative party is rapidly dying on its feet, this is what it has to do in order to maintain power.  They know that they can’t win this upcoming presidential election on fair terms, because not only will the disheartened liberals like myself side with Obama out of the principle of not having Romney put in office, but the GOP voters at large have no love for Romney, since he has proven that he is a flip-flopping croney capitalist who doesn’t believe in anything.

This is what the future of America is looking like.  Instead of politics being a rational and reasonable discussion of values and what is to happen next, we instead get to listen to rhetoric on one side that liberals are all nazis coming to kill you, and conservatives are…well, actually, the rhetoric about them is true.

They want to subvert democracy to keep themselves in power, and the money flowing into only a few people’s hands.

Peace out,

Lefty

The War Against Women Isn’t Over

In fact, it’s just getting started.  The really ugly thing is that women in this country don’t seem to realize that while it is being fought on some fronts, other fronts have them losing ground with incredible speed.  It is something that few women are realizing, and they need to start focusing on.  The worst part is that it is everywhere.  Even my home state of Alaska is taking some hits.

The stuff that is so bat-s*it crazy, like the law forcing women to get a trans-vaginal ultrasound before an abortion, those were all just window dressing.  It was stuff so insane, that women’s groups would immediately attack with all haste, failing to see where they were losing ground.  The irony is that most of this has been on the state level.

Take the issue of abortion.  The number of restrictions to abortion skyrocketed in 2011.  The number of supportive and neutral states in this battle has rapidly been shrinking.  From between 2000 to 2011, it is almost staggering how many states that were in the middle suddenly jumped ship over to being hostile to women getting an abortion.

Next, there is the battle against birth control.  In some places, there are efforts to deny women access to it altogether.  In Arizona, there is a new bill that would allow prospective employers the ability to sniff through a woman’s personal life.  Effectively, a company could ask their women future employees for proof of the medical prescriptions to show that they are using contraception for non-sexual purposes, like treating ovarian cysts.  It’s an invasion of privacy, and all because these group can also deny coverage of contraceptives for “religious reasons.”  The worst reasoning of all time, and our government has given it to them on a silver platter.  Seems that the First Amendment never meant much to anybody.

Religion has had a very big stake in this game.  The Conferance of Catholic Bishops has made a committment to redouble their efforts to stop women from having access to birth control.  They call it, “religious freedom.”  The freedom to do what?  Force your dogma on other women?  Seems to be a good case for it.

A rather frightening turn of events is that Republicans have also suddenly about-faced on legislation that was never and issue, until the LGBT community got involved.  The Violence Against Women Act, something that has never been a partisan issue before now, is under attack from the conservative right.  In the Senate, there is dwindling support, and why?  Because it was up to extend the benefits of it to LGBT, Native, and other minority groups.  This really kind of kills the argument that Republicans are for everyman (or woman).  They are only for their constitutency, and of course, you have to be straight, and not use birth control.

The sad fact is that while women in this country are fighting, they are playing purely defense.  The right wing of this country has always been good at pushing the goal line so far to the right that no progress can truly get done.  And because the liberal crowd will absolutely not fight, for fear of being called “partisan,” women in this country are losing ground.

Ladies, it is time for you to accept that you can no longer just play defense.  The bills like the one for trans-vaginal ultrasound, or ones in Kansas and Utah, they are just fronts.  While people are fighting against those, the real hits to women’s rights are everywhere.

There has got to be some liberal action taken here.  It is time to take the offensive.  People will call us partisan, but the fact is, we literally can’t do anything else now.  It is way past the point of no return.  This is the point of no sanity.  It is insane how this has been allowed to go one, while anybody who says that we need to start being a little bit more proactive in a political countermeasure is called bad.

It’s not a bad thing to have an agenda.  It’s not a bad thing to fight for it.  Republicans have figured that out, and until the liberals realize that we are in a culture war, and are losing, fast, we are eventually going to see all progress destroyed, and all because these people don’t want to stand up for what is right.

The war against women isn’t over.  It’s just gotten started.

Peace out,

Lefty
